活动介绍
[This event is part of the 'Design for Impact' series by diǎn talk, in collaboration with Seeds of Change.]
Join us for an exploration of new design opportunities fueled by sustainable materials as seen through the eyes of two design experts from different fields who focus on materiality at its core. A rare chance to have an honest reflection on our individual and collective impact as creatives from different walks of life. It is not a discussion on sustainability for sustainability sake but for its power to be creatively inspiring and push boudaries of expression.
Ruth Ng, a Color & Material Expert looks into how we can celebrate the beauty of the raw inherent material quality in her talk titled 'Perfectly Imperfect. New Aesthetics of Sustainability'. Processes such as bleaching, painting, coating - used to create sleek and standardized material surfaces - are very often harmful to humans as well as the environment we live in. Ruth explores the potential of harnessing rawness and un-sleek aesthetics of sustainability in design expressions from a color material specialist’s perspective.
Juan Yruella Castillo, Architect, Founder and Partner of COOP will shine light on Creating Chances for Hope with Design. He will showcase how using sustainable materials is easier than we think and how these materials are readily available. Doing a full sustainable house is possible to anyne who is interested in it!
Come mingle and share your thoughts with like minded people!

Ruth Ng
Color & Material Expert, Midea
Ruth Ng is a colour and material designer from Singapore with 17 years of experience working with international brands such as Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Microsoft and BMW. She has lived in Beijing and Shanghai for a total of 10 years and has worked with acclaimed designers in Stockholm, Helsinki, London and Shanghai giving her a global design sensibility which is grounded in a unique understanding of the Chinese context. Having won multiple acclaimed design awards, her work ranges from consumer electronics and home appliances to high speed trains and aircraft interiors.
Ruth believes that good design is beyond the stylistic pursuit of form and aesthetics and that a successful design expresses a brand’s vision and meets its business objectives at the same time. Her interest in sustainability and creating experiences beyond the material has led her to experiment with natural perfumery and a small collection of naturally made skincare products that were featured in Thatsmag Shanghai.

Graduated from the ETSA (Architecture University) in Seville (Spain), Juan Yruela Castillo finished his Master Degree in 2004.
After finishing his Master Degree he had the immense luck of having Mr Alberto Campo Baeza as Master and mentor, setting the foundation of his future career. After 3 more years or work practices in Madrid, in 2007 he moved to his hometown (Badajoz-Spain) where he founded his own design office, delivering projects in the local and international field, with some works in Portugal, Morocco, Scotland or Turkey.
In 2014 life brought him to China where he worked as International Design Manager for TeamZero Design and Planning (2014-2016) in Guangzhou and as a Design Director for Link+ Architects (2016-2018) in Shanghai. He also took part in Design Seminars such as the prestigious Shenzhen Design Fair.
It was at the beginning of 2018 when he decided to set COOP studio office in Shanghai where he is currently developing projects and combining with his architecture teaching career at XJTLU in Suzhou.
Looking back to more than 15 years working as an architect, Juan felt always attracted by new design tendencies closer to the new environmental requirements and sustainable solutions highly demanded in our times. This made him approach to new easy accessible materials and techniques such as bamboo, as well as recyclable, sustainable and environmental friendly solutions.
Juan also feels a great attraction about travelling, photography and mindfulness practices such as Qigong, Taiji or meditation. Finding some spare time to travel and around the world or finding a quiet place closer to nature are necessary activities to keep his life balance.
